Cotton vs Rayon vs Modal: Which Fabric Sleeps Best in Indian Summers

Every fabric label promises "breathable and soft", but in a Gorakhpur summer the difference between fabrics is felt within the first hour of sleep. Here is what each one actually does on skin.

Cotton: the dependable classic

100% cotton absorbs moisture well and lets air pass through the weave, which is why it stays the most trusted choice for hot, humid nights. It can feel slightly less silky against the skin than rayon, but it holds its shape wash after wash and rarely irritates sensitive skin.

Rayon: soft, fluid, a little warmer

Rayon (viscose) drapes beautifully and feels cool to the touch initially, but it retains a bit more humidity than cotton in very high moisture conditions. It is a lovely choice for air-conditioned rooms or the cooler months, and it takes prints and colour exceptionally well.

Modal: the quiet upgrade

Modal is a semi-synthetic fabric made from beech tree pulp - it is softer than cotton, resists pilling, and manages moisture almost as well as cotton while feeling noticeably more premium against the skin. The trade-off is usually a slightly higher price point.

Our verdict

For peak summer, pure cotton wins on breathability. For year-round comfort with a softer hand-feel, modal is worth the upgrade. Rayon remains the most versatile print carrier and works well in most seasons except the most humid months.
